Track and field Buffs commence season

First meet on April 3 against Estacada

Madras High once again boasts quality above quantity as it prepares to launch its 2003 track season.
An assessment to the same effect as last season was voiced by Madras head coach Lonnie Henderson nearly on the eve of an April 3 Tri-Valley League dual meet against Estacada.
With only 12 girls and 15 boys on the roster who will be ready for action in the Thursday competition with Estacada it will be challenging for Madras to post enough points to emerge victorious. That will be the case in many dual meets, except when the other teams are also lacking in numbers.
With the likes of state triple jump champion Dominique Easterling and sprint finalist John Adams back on the boys side plus top scoring discus and shot put competitors Carly Lofting, Charlene Moody and Sierra Ferguson returning for the girls team -- along with former Culver girls standout Cassia Fox having joined the White Buffalos' herd -- there should be many firsts claimed by Madras this year.
Junior Elise Hawes and sophomore Jocelyn Cuautle will be among other returning Buffs expected to challenge for Madras in various events at each meet. Hawes hurdled for Madras in most of its meets last spring while Cuauatle scored in most the sprint races for Madras.
Collecting high finishes is going to be the one path to victory for Madras in each of the meets it enters this spring, for the most part, noted Henderson.
There are too many teams capable of scoring points for second, third and fourth to make Madras mighty in its dual meets, as the one Thursday will be.
Yet, landing wins in a few events and adding some seconds or thirds to them could put the Buffs back among contenders for a district, or even a state, trophy.
One competitor has been sidelined even before the season as freshman Courtney Ellenburg was informed she needs an operation that is being performed this week.
An initial roster, with members of this year's girls and boys teams (by class) showed:
Girls -- Seniors: Casia Fox, Carly Lofting, Aline Simienato (exchange student) and Pasha Smith. Juniors: Elise Hawes and Katherine Smith. Sophomores: Cuautle, Ferguson, Moody. Freshmen: Kristina Roofener and Susan Ahern.
Boys -- Seniors: John Adams and Scott Jividen. Juniors: George Boise, Jesse Whicker, Dom Easterling and Pat Boyle. Sophomores: Andrew Chavez, Nels Gillett, Brad Hutchins, Shard Stormbringer, Austin Roberts, Jacob Struck and Robert Thomas. Freshmen: Stephen Nagell and Stephen Vaeth.
