Freshmen Verna Mitchell and Heather Ben both impressed varsity coach Dick Souers with their pitching for Madras on Saturday, April 4, in the White Buiffalos' doubleheader sweep of Sisters.
Ben and Mitchell had been working on minimizing the walks and runs they gave up and both improved.
"I worked with them this week and the girls showed they were paying attention. Verna only walked two batters and struck out three. She'd usually been walking three or four batters. She cut that way down," said Madras coach Dick Souers.
After pounding their way to a 16-3 win in the first game, the White Buffalos beat Sisters 8-0 in the second game.
Christina Barnes, who had been starting at second, had to miss the first game and part of the second to take a scholastic test. The rest of the Buffs filled in impressively. There were 20 hits pounded out by Madras.
Among the top hitters, said Souers, were Meghan Smith, with a double and three other hits; Rhonda Reynolds, with three hits in four at bats; Helen Maldonado, with two and White Dover Cooper with two. Adding to the attack was Carina Miller with two hits plus Isabel White.
