> Sophomore pitcher Bree Miller perfected her performance on the mound for Culver High's softball Bulldogs -- at least as much as possible for the first three innings -- in an April 8 non-league home game against North Lake.
Striking out the first nine hitters she faced in order in the Bulldogs' 9-1 non-league win over North Lake, Miller went on to collect her third win of the year for the 3-0 Bulldogs.
Culver's Columbia Basin Conference schedule began Tuesday, April 15, when it hosted Umatilla in a 4 p.m. doubleheader that began after deadlines for this week's Pioneer. Culver has another league doubleheader Saturday, April 19, at Heppner, starting at 1 p.m.
In beating North Lake, Culver went ahead for good with a run in the bottom of the first inning before adding two runs in the second and four in the third on the way to the easy win.
Brieona Whitaker and Marissa Hagman joined Miller in collecting two hits each to spark the winning offense.
Defensively, Culver picked up an extra boost from an inning of relief pitching on the mound by Jessi Calderon plus the use of both Hagman and Renee Sosa as catcher.
Catrina Schehen homered and Kristy Allen tripled for Culver during its latest win, which also included some key defensive stops by an assortment of girls including Amanda Allen at first base.
