Highway 97 accident claims Portland man

   May 21, 2003 — A Portland man died and another man injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday on U.S. Highway 97, near Highland Drive in Culver.
   According to Oregon State Trooper John Russo, around 3:25 p.m., a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Alan Wayne Hinman, 48, of Portland, was traveling south, when for an unknown reason, his pickup crossed the center line into the northbound lane, sideswiping a 1994 GMC pickup and fertilizer trailer being driven by David Rubbert, 28, of Bend.
   Witnesses told Trooper Russo that Hinman's vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane and was not attempting to pass at the time.
   Hinman died at the scene, and Rubbert was taken to Mountain View Hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
   Traffic on Highway 97 was diverted to side roads by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department for two hours.
   OSP were assisted at the scene by Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, Jefferson County EMS, and Oregon Department of Transportation. The accident is under investigation by the Madras OSP office.
