Pioneer takes home four awards

   May 21, 2003 — The Madras Pioneer won four awards Saturday in the Greater Oregon Chapter Society of Professional Journalists' newspaper contest for non-daily Oregon newspapers.
   The awards were announced at the annual SPJ Awards Banquet held in Portland. The Pioneer competed against other papers with circulations of less than 8,000, and in a several areas against all other non-daily papers in the state.
   General Editor Susan Matheny garnered three awards, a third place in the Spot News category for "Bees Keep Emergency Workers Busy," a story about a bee truck wreck in Cow Canyon.
   She also took third place in the Personalities category for "Jessica's Recovery Amazes All," about Madras teenager Jessica Glaspie's recovery from a life-threatening gunshot wound. She received an honorable mention award for her column "Local Notions," competing against all other state non-daily papers.
   Pioneer News Editor Troy Foster won a third place award in the Business News category for his story "Race to the Bottom" about local gas wars. He competed against all other non-dailies.
