After 17 years of operating the Ron McDonald Chevrolet dealership, Ron and Joan McDonald are retiring and turning the business over to sons Joe McDonald and Scott Adkisson, and partner Denny Story.
Although Joe and Scott don't look alike, they really are brothers. Scott grew up in Madras, then moved to Bend when he was in the eighth grade. His grandfather was long-time Prineville general practitioner Dr. Adkisson, who the Adkisson Wing is named after at Pioneer Memorial Hospital.
For the past 20 years, Scott had owned an Allstate Insurance business in Bend, and through that also had clients from Madras, Prineville, and Redmond areas.
He sold his insurance business in May 2002, and joined the Ron McDonald dealership in October 2002.
"I'm excited to be building upon the reputation Ron and Joan have created," Scott said of his new business venture.
Denny began working at the Chevy Garage in 1979, when Guy Davis was the owner, and continued on when Ron and Joan purchased the business in 1986.
In 1993, he left to open his own successful business Video Video, then returned to the dealership in 2000 as a salesperson. He now is a partner-owner at the new building that was built in 1999. The dealership currently has 16 employees, a world-class service technician, and extensive inventory of new Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Buick cars and numerous used cars.
"I've been appreciative of the McDonald's through all the years, and of them allowing this partnership to come about. They've been like family," Denny said.
Joe has been part of the dealership with his parents since its inception in downtown Madras in 1986, and said they aren't planning to change the name or anything else.
He said his dad is very pleased with the idea of the brothers teaming up with long-time employee Denny. "It's still our family," he said.
The public is invited to come wish Ron and Joan a happy retirement and meet the new partners at an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 31, at the dealership at 20000 SW Highway 26, south of Madras.
