> Former Madras High soccer star Homero Lopez has maintained his passion for playing.
Lopez earned a hat trick with three goals for the Pumas team of mainly Madras players on Sunday. The performance anchored a 5-2 win over Culver's team in a Cascade Area Soccer Association game played at Juniper Hills Park. Banni Viramontes and Domingo Martinez supported the Pumas effort strongly, with single goals.
Securing a 3-1 lead in the first half, the Pumas won despite a red card which trimmed the players they could use against Culver's goal keeper and 10 field players to only nine in the field during the contest between Jefferson County teams.
The eventual victory for Pumas, coached by Madras High junior varsity boys soccer coach Jose Lopez, required balance assistance on offense and defense from various players.
Goal keeper Lazaro Najera got a rare assist when he pounded a punt with the wind behind his back which Homero Lopez was able to race under as it sailed past mid field. A deft pass to himself later and Lopez had the one-on-one against Culver's goal keeper that netted the Pumas their first goal.
Hernando Mendoza and Juan Gomez picked up the goals for Culver which at one point created a 3-2 difference before the second-half tallies by Lopez.
