>Senior duo win on Saturday for first time to make consolation title match but fall
Madras High seniors Lindsay Carroll and Emily Struck put a new ending on their tennis season as the Buffs girls first doubles team on Saturday.
Wins on Friday and Saturday at the Les Schwab - U.S. Bank Oregon 3A-2A-1A state tournament provided Struck and Carroll their first wins at the event in three attempts.
After falling 6-1 and 6-2, to Marist's Elizabeth Mullen and Rachel Rice, who were the third-ranked team in the event, in their first match in the girls doubles division at Eugene on Friday, Struck and Carroll won via default in the first round of consolation play that afternoon.
Winning on the court on Saturday morning, to reach the consolation bracket finals, proved the high point of the seniors' showing.
Despite falling to Oregon Episcopal's Priya Bhatt and Leslie Taylor, 6-1, 6-1, in the consolation finals, Struck and Carroll advanced two rounds further in the tournament than in either 2001 or 2002.
Though only the first- to fourth-place teams and the consolation winner claimed trophies, Madras came closer to earning a girls state tennis tournament than it has in many years.
