Stills earns coaching award

Lorne Stills, the Culver Middle School coach who also assists J.D. Alley with Culver High's wrestling program, was recently recognized as a Coach of the Year among all of Oregon's Middle School coaches. He received the award at a May 31 banquet in the Len Casanova Center at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
Stills was selected from nominations submitted to the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association, which is open to coaches at all levels in the state. He was picked from among all different sports and all sized schools as the Middle School winner. He has been coaching the Culver middle school since the 1997-'98 school year.
Nominations were reviewed by a committee which made the decisions.
Stills has been involved with football besides wrestling at Culver Middle School, Alley noted.
"He's been picked best in all divisions and all sports," Alley said of the Middle School awards for coaches not having as many designations as at the High School level.
Once a coach is noted as a coach of the year in their sport, however, they go into competition for overall coach of the year, which Alley was eligible for after earning Coach of the Year among 2A wrestling coaches during the winter.
