Children injured in bike, vehicle accident

   July 9, 2003 — Two youngsters were injured in a bicycle and van accident Sunday on Highway 97 just north of Jefferson Street in Madras.
   According to witnesses interviewed by sheriff's deputies and evidence at the scene, at 3:04 p.m., driver John William Sales, 85, of Bend, was southbound on Highway 97 in a white 1978 Ford van when a 10-year-old boy crossed the highway in front of him.
   Sales attempted to avoid the boy, but while doing so struck a 12-year-old girl riding a bicycle on the shoulder, and hit the boy. The names of the children were not released.
   The girl was taken by ambulance to Mountain View Hospital, where she was treated and released later. The boy was taken to Mountain View, then air lifted to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with serious injuries. Both children were wearing safety helmets during the crash.
