New market opens on Hwy. 97

by: Photo By Susan Matheny - Young and Gen Ahn carry snacks, drinks, and all sorts of bargain items inside their store on Highway 97.

After four years in Madras, Gen Ahn has sold her Gourmet Coffee and Tea business, and May 1, opened 97 Mart, on the corner at 776 NE Highway 97 and Jefferson Street.
From a rural area of Korea originally, Ahn first came here because she didn't like the hassle of city life in Portland and wanted to live and own a business in a small town. Her husband, Young, was working in Portland and commuting here on weekends, but now has joined her full-time in Madras, along with her brother and sister-in-law, who also work at 97 Mart.
With a good location for a convenience store, 97 Mart offers snacks, soft drinks, beer, and grocery items, with many at discount prices. The newly-painted, well-organized store also carries clothing, purses, wallets, CDs, jewelry, office supplies, pet items and much more. Come in and explore.
Future plans include opening an antique shop in an adjacent section of the store, and more landscape work around the building.
   Open seven days a week, 97 Mart's hours are 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The business phone is 475-9776.
