Several local events planned for July 4

   July 2, 2003 — America’s birthday will be celebrated Friday, July 4 in Madras beginning with a morning 10K run, then parade and fun in the park, capped off by a spectacular evening fireworks display.
    The 10K Todd Beamer Memorial Run begins at 6:30 a.m., with runners meeting at Sahalee Park to register and ride a bus out to the starting point. Race begins at 8 a.m.
    Other events include a 13.1-mile ride and tie race, 10K walk, and two-mile Fun Run for all ages.
    For early-bird spectators and run participants, Alpha Omicron Sorority will be serving a full breakfast, beginning at 7:30 a.m., in the park.
    At 11 a.m., the Fourth of July Parade will march down 10th Street and wind around the park.
    Those entering the parade should register at 9:30 a.m. at the Madras High tennis courts.
    Kids don’t have to register, and can line up in front of Madras Elementary on 10th Street.
    After the parade, join the festivities at Sahalee Park, sponsored by Jefferson County Habitat for Humanity.
    A flag raising and opening ceremonies will be held at noon, followed by a full day of music, games for the kids, and food booths.
    The entertainment line-up includes The Community Band, singing by Beth Ann Beamer, songs by Dennis Young, the country and western sounds of Prairie South featuring Mark Harris and Scott Williams, and the Hispanic band “Clave.”
    At dusk, the Madras Sparklers will present a fireworks extravaganza for the whole town to enjoy.
    Some $10,000 worth of fireworks will light the Madras skies, thanks to donations from individuals and local businesses.
