Will help with medical expenses

Garage sale buffs will have the chance to shop while helping a local man pay his medical bills, Saturday, July 5, at the Mud Springs Grange.
Thirty-seven-year-old Eric Nicholas of Madras underwent surgery in for a brain tumor June 24, in Bend and is doing well, according to his wife, Candice. Eric is also the son of longtime Madras resident Jewel Nicholas, and he and Candice have two children, Joshua, 7, and Seth, 2.
This is the second bout with cancer for Eric, his wife said. The Nicholases had moved from Eugene to Madras in September 2002, so Eric could work at Bright Wood Corporation. As a leadman, he supervises a crew that operates a window molding machine.
But last December, he suffered a seizure at work and subsequent tests revealed a large, grade-two malignant brain tumor, which required immediate surgery. Since it appeared the whole tumor was removed, he did not have follow-up radiation therapy, but CAT and MRI scans were done every three months. Eric was able to return to his job three or four months following surgery.
During his February scan, a small spot was noted, that was thought to be scar tissue. However, when he went in for his May scans, it was learned the tumor had grown back and was large, requiring more surgery and post-operative radiation.
His wife said they have health insurance that will pay for most of the surgery, but they have to pay the deductible and 10 to 15 percent of the medical bills out-of-pocket.
With two small children Candice said, "I've been a housewife, but now I'll probably get a job. But I have to drive Eric to Bend five days a week for 30 sessions of radiation treatments, which complicates things."
In order to help the Nicholas family with their medical bills, his mother Jewel (a longtime clerk at Erickson's Market) and other relatives and friends have organized a gigantic benefit yard sale from 8 a.m. to dusk, Saturday, July 5, at the Mud Springs Grange, at the corner of Third Street and Old Culver Highway, in Madras.
