Activity plentiful at drags

> Madras Dragstrip enjoyed its busiest weekend ever Friday, Saturday and Sunday as competition took place three days in a row for the first time since a new group took over the venue. There was a special Street Legal competition held on Friday night, under lights, as a prelude to the more usual elimination racing held Saturday and Sunday.
Yet, Saturday and Sunday held a special aura too.
Racing for year-end awards from the National Hot Rod Assication called Wallys -- in honor of a drag racing pioneer -- was taking place on July 19 and 20, along with the normal divisional points chases.
Divisional competition kept Friday's street legal event from getting dominated by those experienced in dragstrip racing as "Compact" and "Street Legal - Domestic" racing was open to those who had not run on a light. Steet Legal - Bracket division racers were mainly those who had run at tracks before but wanted less power Friday.
Shane Osborne of Bend drove his 1988 Honda CRX to a time of 10.12 seconds on an estimate of 10 to nip another Bend product, Josh Brown, whose 2002 Integra went one-eighth mile in 10.37 to earn second.
Mark Hodges beat Gene Lind in the Street Legal Domestics division finals by breaking out by less than his fellow finalist. Hodges needed only 10.14 for a run he said would take 10.18 while Lind drove his 1967 El Camino down the course in 10.09 seconds when he said he'd need 10.14.
Ryan Waddell from Bend, a regular at the track on a motorcycle drove his 1997 GMC to a time of 11.5 on an prediction of 11.38 to nip Allan Powell, whose 8.4 exactly matched his prediction, but without as good a reaction time as Waddell.
Saturday and Sunday competition shifted gears as the normal categories drew more numerous entries.
Friday's racing drew more fans than to any event so far this season, but more events might bring in still others.
Saturday saw Dave Young from Aurora, Jeff Lind from Sherwood, Vicki McKelvy from Madras plus David Reese all win. There was a specal junior dragster class and Jackpot racing. Casey DePeel earned the Junior Dragster title while Fred Lang rebounded to win the Jackput racing.
The are more results on the scoreboard.
