The West Linn cross country teams had arguably their best races of the year last week at Fernhill Park.

The Lions saw teams from Jesuit, Central Catholic, St. Mary's and Lake Oswego and it results with the Lakers counted in the league standings.

The boys race between West Linn and Lake Oswego was exceedingly close. The Lakers' Nate Normo finished first for his team and fourth overall.

But a pair of Lions finished right on his heels.

Connor Cushman and Dillon George each turned in career-best times and finished just one and two seconds behind Normo respectively in a very close finish.

The Lakers had the next two finishers that crossed the line but, again, the Lions followed closely with strong races from Tyler Griffin and Derek Fieldhouse, who took 10th and 11th individually and each finished ahead of Lake Oswego's No. 4 runner.

Ultimately the race would come down to which team's No. 5 runner would cross the finish line first.

Braden Krellwitz finished nine seconds ahead of Lake Oswego's Peter Banta and the Lions edged out the Lakers.

The girls race would be as close. The Lakers had the top finisher of the two teams in Shae Vallaire but West Linn placed seven runners in front of the Lakers' No. 2.

The Lions had four runners finish in a pack, led by Elie Clow's fastest time of the season.

She was followed closely by Rebecca Donnelly, Leah Henningsen and Julia Boyd-Helm. All four girls finished consecutively.

Cailin Guerins and Hanna Morford also cracked the top 25 individually and Tara Galloway had a strong race, edging out the Lakers' second fastest runner.

Next up for the Lions is a race today (Thursday) at St. Helens.
