ALBANY - In a tournament that included many of the top volleyball teams from around the state, the Sherwood High School volleyball sure seemed to prove that, indeed, it is one of the state's top squads.

Sherwood, the defending Class 5A state champion, battled its way to the championship game of the State Preview Tournament, held Saturday at South Albany High School.

The Lady Bowmen opened the tournament in a big way, splitting a pool play match with defending Class 6A state champion Central Catholic.

Sherwood won the first game of the match 25-22, giving Central Catholic its first loss of a game to an Oregon team this season. The Rams won the second game 25-12.

The Lady Bowmen then bested both North Medford and Crescent Valley to finish second in its pool and advance to the championship bracket.

In the quarterfinal round of bracket play, Sherwood scored a 25-21, 25-17 win over Sunset from the Metro League. In the semifinals, the Bowmen scored a 25-15, 21-25, 15-11 win over West Albany, which downed Jesuit in the quarterfinals.

In the championship match, Sherwood found itself again facing Central Catholic. This time, the rams came out with a 25-14, 25-16 victory to win the tournament championship.

Prior to the tournament, the Lady Bowmen scored a 25-18, 25-14, 25-10 win over Wilsonville in a Northwest Oregon Conference match played at Sherwood High School.

On Tuesday, Sherwood scored a 25-10, 25-10, 25-6 win over Putnam in a league match played at Putnam High School.

With the two wins, the Lady Bowmen improved to 6-1 in league matches.

The Lady Bowmen will be back in action tonight (Thursday) when they play at Liberty in a league match starting at 6:45 p.m. Sherwood and Liberty, who played in last year's Class 5A state championship match, met earlier this season with the Falcons scoring a 25-22, 25-27, 13-25, 15-19, 15-9 win in a season-opening match played at Sherwood High School.
