Police locate driver in fatal hit-and-run

Was working as postal service subcontractor

Portland police have identified the truck and driver that struck and killed a woman near the Portland airport Tuesday morning.

The police have not released the name of the driver but say he works for a company called Mail Carriers, Inc., and is a contractor working for the United States Postal Service. No arrests had been made by Friday morning.

The woman, Abanesh Awoki, 21, was apparently struck in the intersection of Northeast 82nd and Alderwood. Port of Portland Police officers found her around 6:00 a.m. while responding to a report of a pedestrian struck there.

Medical personnel responded and determined that she was deceased.

The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division's Major Crash Team responded to assist the Port Police with the crash investigation. Initial observations led the officers to believe that Awokie may have been the victim of a hit and run.

The investigation is ongoing.
