Donations from Vancouver, Wash., event to support veterans museums
A traveling exhibition on the history of World War I called 'Honoring Our History' will land at Pearson Air Museum, 1115 East Fifth St., Vancouver, Wash., on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission for the event, part of the 75-city 'Honoring Our History' exhibition sponsored by the Beaverton office of Waddell and Reed Financial Advisers, is free to the public.
The exhibit includes a simulated trench like those soldiers used in battle nearly 100 years ago, along with a flight simulator lab and vintage World War I planes on display.
'It simulates what it would actually feel like to move around in there,' said Michael Landis, associate manager of Waddell and Reed's Beaverton office, of the trench. 'You hear gunshots going on over your head, and all the screaming and yelling' heard in the midst of battle.
The Kansas City, Mo., company is sponsoring the nationwide exhibit to celebrate 75 years of business and to honor its founders, Chauncey Waddell and Cameron Reed, who were World War I veterans. The exhibit will feature Waddell's flight gear, flight suit and log book from the war.
Landis is leading the company's coordination efforts for the Portland-area exhibit, with other employees from Beaverton, Portland and Vancouver offices pitching in.
Although the event is free, Landis said donations of $5 and up are welcome. Those who donate $25 or more will receive a T-shirt and other door prizes.
Waddell and Reed seek to raise $500,000 in donations during the exhibit tour, which started on Labor Day and will culminate in 2012 at the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial in Kansas City.
'This is a unique opportunity for the public to reflect on what people before us had to go through to keep this country free,' Landis said. 'It's an opportunity to learn something you would otherwise have to travel to Kansas City or the Smithsonian (Institution) to learn about.'
