UPDATE • Police say driver had outstanding warrants
A 35-year-old man died early Monday morning in a high-speed crash on Southeast 112th Avenue near Powell Boulevard.
Police have not released the person's name in the accident. The Portland Police Bureau's Major Crash Team is investigating the incident.
At about 1:21 a.m., an officer patrolling the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood was driving north on Southeast 112th Avenue from Powell Boulevard when he spotted a black 1993 Chevrolet Corvette speeding south past the patrol car.
The officer began to turn around to stop the car but the driver of the speeding car lost control as it crossed Powell Boulevard and the vehicle crashed into two parked cars before coming to rest in a residential yard.
The driver died in the crash. The car had been reported stolen late Sunday evening.
Police said Monday afternoon that the driver faced outstanding warrants for burglary and a parole violation.
The intersection of Southeast 112th Avenue and Powell Boulevard was shut down for several hours as investigators processed the crash scene.
