Youth rally set Thursday at Forest Grove High
Student leaders at Forest Grove High School are raising awareness and promoting acceptance for students who are sometimes labeled 'different' with a special event Thursday. The first Forest Grove Youth Rally will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at FGHS, 1401 Nichols Lane. Junior Elena Torry-Schrag, one of the event organizers, said Laz D, a 28-year-old Lake Oswego rapper who has Down Syndrome, will be at the FGHS rally.
Bob Joondeph, executive director of Disability Rights Oregon, is a featured speaker, and live local music and food will be provided. The event is being underwritten by California toy manufacturer Mattel, a major sponsor of the Special Olympics.
Dilley 'outstanding' on state report card
Forest Grove's Dilley Elementary School was rated 'outstanding' on the 2010-11 Oregon Report Card. Results of the 13th annual report cards were released Oct. 6.
Other schools in the Forest Grove School District all earned 'satisfactory' ratings. Report cards are based on state test results, participation, academic growth and other factors.
All three schools in the Banks School district were rated 'satisfactory,' as were Gaston School district's two schools.
Adequate Yearly Progress reports released in August showed that Gaston 'met' federal standards for 2010-11, while schools in Forest Grove and Banks did not.
