Events benefit tsunami victims

Several local groups have organized events to raise money to benefit the victims of the devastating tsunamis that struck countries around Indonesia on Dec. 26:
   Jan. 12: Figaro's Pizza will donate 25 percent of its proceeds on this day to the Portland-based Mercy Corps to aid in disaster relief in Southeast Asia. Since 1979, Mercy Corps has provided over $830 million in assistance to people in 80 nations.
   Jan. 14: Jefferson County Middle School will hold a fund-raising dance from 3:30 to 5:20 p.m., for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders, with all admission and concession money being donated to Northwest Medical Teams of Portland. Any other people are welcome to make donations by calling JCMS leadership class advisor Rhian Lang at 475-7253.
   Jan. 15: The Madras High School cheerleaders will hold a hot dog sale on Saturday at Erickson's Sentry Market in Madras to raise funds for tsunami victims by donating money raised to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Donation cans are also being set up in all Madras area schools.
   Jan. 22: The So Spoiled Salon and Spa, which recently opened at 35 S.E. C St., Madras, (former New Images Salon) will donate all earnings made on Saturday, Jan. 22, to aid tsunami victims. The salon also challenges all other salons, spas, and barber shops to do the same. For more information, call 475-0545.
   Jan. 23: The Madras Elks Lodge will hold a communitywide spaghetti feed from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at the lodge, at $5 a plate, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to benefit Northwest Medical Teams, which is aiding tsunami victims.
