Tompkins deployed to Iraq
Seventh trip to Middle East
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jon B. Tompkins, the son of Jim and Darla Tompkins of Madras, has been deployed to Baqubah, Iraq, for one year of service in Operation Iraqi Freedom 3.
Tompkins is an all-source intelligence technician, assigned to the Third Brigade (nicknamed "Sledgehammer"), Third Infantry Division, from Ft. Benning, Ga.
According to his parents, Tompkins previously served as a ranger with the 75th Ranger Regiment and has been on seven missions rotating between Afghanistan and Iraq, but this is his first long deployment.
On his first tour to Iraq, Tompkins was awarded with a bronze star medal.
"His job is high security, so we don't know exactly what he won the bronze medal for, other than it was while defending one of the major dams in the Euphrates during the first part of the Iraqi Freedom Campaign," his mother said.
This mission will be to establish a safe and secure environment in Iraq. The troops are being supported by communities in the area around Ft. Benning, including with support programs for their families. Tompkins' family will remain in Ft. Benning during his tour of duty.
