MILWAUKIE - Milwaukie High School during the summer named Jesse Eveland as its new athletic director, replacing retiring athletic director Shirley Huyett.
Eveland, 32, is a 1997 graduate of Rex Putnam High School, where he played on a baseball team that advanced to the state quarterfinals.
He went on to play four years of college baseball, two years at College of the Siskiyous and two years at Concordia.
Eveland went to work at Putnam after graduating from Concordia, teaching special education behavior management classes, math, and health, while also serving as assistant coach in baseball for six seasons.
He's worked in Putnam's student management office the past three years, and he served as an assistant to athletic director Daniel Barendse the past two years.
'I've enjoyed teaching and I've enjoyed coaching,' said Eveland. 'But it's always been a dream to work on a bigger scale - to impact as many kids as possible…
'I like working in athletics and I've always wanted to be an athletic director.'
Asked which team he will root for when Putnam and Milwaukie athletic teams play one another, Eveland said, 'Loyalty is big for me, and Putnam will always have a special place in my heart. But our assistant superintendent gave me some good advice. She said, 'You have to root for where your paycheck comes from.'
'I'll never forget about my roots or look down on Putnam. But I'm definitely a Mustang now.'
