St. Helens council expected to consider Barlows vacated seat
The St. Helens City Council is likely to begin discussions at its Oct. 19 meeting about filling the council seat vacated when former Councilor Phil Barlow unexpectedly died Sept. 24 while in Thailand. 'What the charter says is that we will appoint somebody, but we haven't had a discussion about timelines or how we would approach candidates or anything like that,' said Mayor Randy Peterson.
The appointed person would be on the council until the next election cycle for that position, which in this case would be Dec. 31, 2015. Barlow, 39, had started his second four-year elected term as a councilor Jan. 1.
Paul Barlow, Phil's brother, is reportedly interested in filling the position, and has expressed interest to the city to that effect, Peterson said.
