MHS girls' soccer meets tough foes

The 5A girls' soccer state rankings are correct as far as Madras is concerned.
The White Buffalos opened Intermountain Conference play with losses to No. 7 Summit (4-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 3) and then No. 2 Bend (8-0 on Thursday). Madras started this season against No. 1 Sherwood (falling 9-0 on Sept. 5).
In the Bend loss, a trio of host Lava Bears scored two goals each. Bend scored three goals in the opening nine minutes, eventually leading 5-0 at half.
Against Summit, the Storm led 1-0 at half. Keeper Briana Stacona finished with 20 saves to "keep the game close," Madras coach Phil Smith said. "They wore us down in the second half. All the girls ran hard in the first half. They also controlled the ball too much against our defense."
Madras has one home match left, finishing up the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 24 against The Dalles.
