Peter Beckett

Peter Nielson Beckett died Oct. 10, 2011. He was 84.

Mr. Beckett was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Portland to Roy John and Edna Nielson Beckett. The family moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1940, where he graduated from Piedmont High School.

He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1949, and sailed as a deck officer for a number of years. He served as a U.S. Navy officer during the Korean War and remained in the Naval Reserve for 26 years, retiring as a commander in 1971.

Mr. Becket built his career in the maritime industry. He worked with Matson Navigation Co., and joined Jones Washington Stevedoring as president in 1976. He later served as chairman of the board until his retirement in 1992.

Mr. Beckett married Lucile Mooney in New York, N.Y., in 1953. Mrs. Beckett died in 1983.

Mr. Beckett married Ellen Dietsche in Portland in 1985.

Mr. Beckett served on a number of trade association boards, including as director of the Pacific Maritime Association, president of the Pacific Rim Trade Association, president of the Japan-America Society of Washington, and director emeritus of the Japan-American Society of Oregon. From 1972 to 1974 he was Northwest vice president of the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and served on the state of Oregon's Maritime Advisory Commission under Gov. Victor F. Atiyeh. Mr. Beckett was also a member of Oswego Lake Country Club, Our Lady of the Lake Parish and was a former member of the University Club.

Travel was a passion of Mr. Beckett's, especially cruising with his wife, Ellen.

Survivors include his wife Ellen of Lake Oswego, sons Peter Beckett, Seattle, and Christopher Beckett of Portland, stepson Thomas Dietsche of Maryland, daughters Virginia Holmes of Lake Oswego and Constance McLenaghan of Seattle, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Parish, 650 A Ave., in Lake Oswego.

A reception will be held the next day, Oct. 16, from noon to 2 p.m. at Oswego Lake Country Club, 20 Iron Mountain Blvd., Lake Oswego.

Nisha Rana

Lake Oswego resident Nisha Hiren Rana died Oct. 2, 2011 in an automobile accident. She was 25.

Ms. Rana was born Sept. 22, 1986 to Hiren and Vandana Rana. She graduated from Lakeridge High School in 2005 and from University of California Santa Bar-bara in 2009.

Ms. Rana loved animals and she had a passion for pairing friends with animals in need of rescuing. She was also known for helping people who had problems get through them.

Survivors include her parents and her sister, Avani Gupta of San Luis Obispo, Calif.

A family service has been held.
