Military couple promoted while in Iraq

by: Submitted Photo - Captains April and John Courtney in Iraq.

Madras High graduates April (Hornbuckle) and Jonathan Courtney were both promoted to the rank of captain in July, while serving in Iraq.
April is the daughter of Bob Hornbuckle, and Jonathan is the son of Don and Ellen Courtney, all of Madras.
The military Courtneys were both in the JROTC program at MHS. She graduated in 1999 and he graduated in 1998. They both enrolled in the ROTC program at Oregon State University. They were married in 2002, and were commissioned as lieutenants in the U.S. Army upon graduation from OSU. Jonathan took additional Ranger and airborne training in the Army.
The Courtneys were both deployed to a forward operating base in Iraq in December. "They are at the same base, but he works days and she works nights," Ellen Courtney said.
In Iraq, April works in military intelligence, while Jonathan is a battle captain. Because of the confidentiality of their jobs, they can't tell their parents exactly where they are or what they are doing.
Their assignment in Iraq is for one year.
