Big dog show in Madras

The Volcano View Rat Terrier Club of Madras is hosting an all-breeds United Kennel Club Dog Show in Madras on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26-27.
The show is expected to have about 300 dogs entered, from all over the West and Canada. Judges have been secured from Utah, Arizona and Nevada.
The UKC is different from the younger, but maybe better known, American Kennel Club. Many dog owners compete in both clubs. One of the primary differences is that the UKC is "more casual," noted Glaspey, and it's geared toward owners showing instead of professional handlers showing the dogs.
Glaspey and his wife, Debbie, own and show several rat terriers. Their dog Anna is the only grand champion in Central Oregon, said Glaspey, as she won a Claremont, Calif., competition over Memorial Day Weekend, while shown by Debbie.
The Madras show is open to all breeds, with registration open to anyone. The only requirement is that the dog be a purebred. Early registration is $18 per dog.    There will be no prize money awarded (another UKC policy, noted Glaspey) at the Madras event, but big trophies for all breed winners and interbreed competition champions.
The Volcano View Rat Terrior Club is a nonprofit organization, and this event is a nonprofit project. Glaspey has obtained sponsorships to make it a reality. For further information on the show, or sponsorship opportunities, contact Glaspey at 475-6233, or visit the Web site.
If you want to just watch, attendance is free.
