Ellsbury helps Portland to EL title
Portland beat Akron 8-5 in Sunday's deciding fifth game on the Sea Dogs' home field. Madras native Jacoby Ellsbury was part of Portland scoring four runs in both the second and third innings.
With two outs in the second, Ellsbury hit a groundball single to third. A throwing error allowed a Sea Dog runner to score from second.
An inning later, Ellsbury hit a two-out RBI single for the Portland's fourth run of the inning.
The Sea Dogs (a Boston Red Sox affiliate) took a 2-0 lead by sweeping the Tuesday and Wednesday games at Akron (Cleveland affiliate). Portland won 4-3 with Ellsbury banging out two singles and scoring a first-inning run.
The Sea Dogs took the second game 11-8 as Ellsbury scored a run in the first. He had a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, part of a six-run fourth.
Akron forced a fifth game with a 6-4 Friday win and 6-5 Saturday win. Ellsbury had an RBI single Friday and two hits with a run Saturday.
In the championship series, Ellsbury was 7-for-23 (.304) with four runs and four RBI. Portland advanced to the title series by beating Trenton (New York Yankees affiliate) in five games.
Ellsbury hit a combined .250 (11-44) in the two playoff series. He scored eight runs and drove in seven. During the regular season, Ellsbury hit .303 while playing half a season for Wilmington of the A Carolina League and the other half at Portland.
Next up for Ellsbury is a trip to the Arizona Fall League for a month-long season (Oct. 17 to Nov. 18). Ellsbury will play for the Peoria Javelinas with players from the Boston, Florida, Atlanta and Seattle organizations.
