Three Madras High JROTC members biked, ran and kayaked their way to third place in their division in the Rogue Triathlon Hellgate Challenge this summer.
According to JROTC instructor Lt. Col. Larry Renfro, cadets Sergio Aguirre, Samuel Aguirre and Jeff Walston tackled the 36-mile course near Grants Pass on Aug. 6.
"Sammy was the runner (7 miles), Jeff the bicycler (24 miles), and Sergio paddled a kayak donated by G.I. Joe's," Renfro said.
The course followed the scenic Rogue River from Merlin past the rim of Hellgate Canyon to Grave Creek Bridge, and was open to athletes of all ages. This was not just a school or JROTC event.
Categories included all-male relay team, all-female relay team, coed relay team, individual male, individual female, and those just participating in the running leg of the race.
The event also is a fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Renfro said Jeff is a bicycling enthusiast and Sam is a runner, so they were already trained for the event.
"The only one we didn't train was Sergio the kayaker, and we probably should have because he swamped the kayak at the end and had to swim it to the finish line," Renfro said.
Even with that setback, the MHS team still took third place in the all-male relay team division.
