Culver trio medal at state wrestling

A trio of area middle school wrestlers finished among the top six at the state tournament at Woodburn on Saturday.
   The trio were among 11 wrestlers from Culver and Jefferson County middle schools competing in the tourney.
   Ryan Kasch at 105 pounds and Austin Barany at 136 both finished second. David Badillo earned fifth place in the 110 division. Barany is in eighth grade while Kasch and Badillo are in seventh grade. All three won titles at the Eastern Oregon regionals on March 3 in Boardman.
   Four other Culver wrestlers also qualified for state. They were: Jesus Retano, 90; Josue Gonzalez, 95; Miguel Gutierrez, 122 and Colton Williams, 175.
   Culver finished seventh in the team standings with 69.5 points. Sandstone Middle School of Hermiston won the state title with 159 points and three champions.
   Four JCMS wrestlers qualified for state. They were Adrian Phillips at 275, a regional champion; Justin Hendrix, 195; Kole Wills, 75 and Jessie Macias, 165.
   JCMS scored 11 team points, tied for 55th place. Last month, the Buffalos finished fourth in the district tournament. For results, see Scoreboard on Page 14.
