Frosh lead Culver to wins
A busy schedule continues on for Culver baseball.
The Bulldogs had one day off during a five-day stretch between playing in the La Pine tourney and resuming Special District 3 baseball action. Culver hosted Perrydale on Monday.
Two more league games follow this week, traveling to Blanchet in Salem today and to Santiam on Friday.
In Monday's league contest, Culver overwhelmed Perrydale 23-1. The victory improved the Bulldog league mark to 2-2 (3-5 overall).
Culver took control with a 10-run second inning, pounding out part of the team's 17 hits. Nick Barany and Andrew Hansen led the offense by driving in five runs each. Barany had four hits including a pair of doubles while Hansen pounded out two doubles among his three hits.
Jeremiah Calvin added three hits with Riley Gibson and John Decker contributing two hits each.
La Pine tourney
Culver opened with an 8-3 victory against Harrisburg on Thursday. The Bulldogs then lost to Sisters 14-6 Friday and to Gaston 12-5 Saturday.
In the win, a pair of freshmen led the way. Between Calvin's pitching and Barany's hitting, Culver took care of Harrisburg.
Calvin needed 90 pitches in throwing a complete game. The righty allowed just five hits and no more than one run in an inning.
"Both my fastball and curve were working well," Calvin said. "They were fine when I was warming up and also in the game."
Barany helped the Bulldogs expand a quick 5-0 lead. The catcher hit a solo homer to left in the third and added a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Culver jumped ahead early thanks in part to Andrew Hansen's RBI double, Ben Fisher hitting a run-scoring single and Decker's sacrifice fly.
Michael Williams added an RBI single in the fourth.
On Friday, Sisters jumped ahead 7-0 against Culver on the way to the win. The Bulldogs attempted to rally with a three-run third.
Terry Nelson had two hits including a double and drove in two runs. Calvin added two hits, scoring twice and driving in a run.
In Saturday's loss, Gaston took advantage of Culver errors to score six runs in the third. Fisher belted a homer and Hansen a double in the loss.
