EUGENE - Oregon expected to play without the nation's leading rusher, LaMichael James, when the Ducks took on Arizona State. And there he was in street clothes.

With James out, the Ducks (4-1, 2-0) were going to rely on Kenjon Barner and De'Anthony Thomas to run the ball against the Sun Devils (5-1, 3-0) in the Pac-12 Conference showdown Saturday night at Autzen Stadium.

Kickoff was pushed back to 7:26 p.m.

Here's the quarter-by-quarter game track:

Arizona State QB Brock Osweiler tried to beat the Ducks early, to no avail. But Barner fumbled on UO's second play, with ASU recovering at the UO 36.

A roughing-the-passer penalty put ASU at the UO 22. On third-and-8, Osweiler winged a 20-yard TD pass to Gerell Robinson, and ASU led 7-0.

UO's next series: three-and-out.

Cliff Harris returned a punt 23 yards after a UO defensive stop, setting the Ducks up at the ASU 47.

Darron Thomas hit David Paulson on a 16-yard pass, and an ensuing personal foul penalty (late hitting out of bounds) by ASU's notorious Vontaze Burfict, put UO at the ASU 16.

Very quickly, De'Anthony Thomas eluded tacklers on a highlight-reel 16-yard TD run, as UO tied the score.

ASU moved downfield again. Osweiler hit Mike Willie (21 yards), Robinson (14) and George Bell (12), and Jamal Miles ran for nine to the UO 20. After a delay penalty, Osweiler pin-pointed a 25-yard TD pass to Willie, who beat Harris on the play. ASU led 14-7.

Osweiler's stats: 10 of 12 for 112 yards, two TDs.

Thomas threw 13 yards to Paulson, and then Barner appeared to run for a 59-yard TD, but the Ducks got whistled for illegal block. UO later lined up to punt, but Bryan Bennett took the snap in an odd formation and ran 10 yards to get close to the first down. He came up a yard short, and ASU took over at midfield.

On third-and-10, Osweiler hit Rashad Ross for 11 yards.

On third down, Boseko Lokombo sacked Osweiler, forcing a punt.

The Sun Devils forced a bad Thomas incompletion from UO's own end zone on third down, but an ASU player, Bo Moos, got whistled for hands-to-the-face - suspect call.

Thomas hit Josh Huff for 45 yards to the ASU 28. Then Thomas found Lavasier Tuinei in the corner of the end zone for a 28-yard TD pass, and UO tied it 14-14.

Oregon got a stop when Osweiler, who had moved the Sun Devils, threw incomplete on third down.

Burfict got another late-hit penalty, but Shelly Lyons picked off Thomas and returned to the UO 20. But Osweiler tossed three incompletions.

Alex Garoutte hit a 37-yard field goal, and it was 17-14, ASU leading.

Thomas threw to De'Anthony Thomas, and center Hroniss Grasu got called for personal foul when he pushed Burfict. The Ducks punted.

Then came a huge turn of events.

Osweiler led ASU downfield. He threw 12 yards to Robinson to the UO 22, but the receiver got called for personal foul after the tackle. From the UO 37, Osweiler's end zone pass was picked off by Harris, who returned the ball to midfield.

On three pass plays the Ducks scored: Thomas to Justin Hoffman for 11 yards, Thomas to Huff for 27 and Thomas to Paulson for the 12-yard TD, and UO led 21-17 with 27 seconds left in the first half.

The Ducks had 245 yards offense to ASU's 219. UO ran for 58 yards, ASU 47. Osweiler went 18 of 26 for 172 yards; Thomas went 13 of 16 for 187 yards.

On UO's second play, QB Thomas ran the ball and got hurt, holding his knee, but he then ran off the field. Colin Parker had fallen on his knee; Bennett replaced Thomas, and the Ducks punted.

Much like what ASU did in beating Utah on the road last weekend (25 unanswered points in 35-14 win), it came out strong. Miles ran for 51 yards, Marshall ran for nine and three and then four for the touchdown, putting ASU ahead 24-21.

Thomas didn't come out for the next series. With Bennett, the Ducks bounced back. Barner ran for six and 14 yards, Tra Carson for three and De'Anthony Thomas 29 with his shifty moves.

Bennett threw 13 yards to Hoffman, and then De'Anthony Thomas scored on a 3-yard TD run, putting UO up 28-24.

On third-and-2, Osweiler attempted a long pass to Kyle Middlebrooks, which was broken up - going for a big play when two yards would have got a first down and kept the drive alive against a quick-striking UO team?

After a punt, Bennett ran 36 yards to the UO 48. After an incompletion, Bennett ran 18 yards to the ASU 34, before fumbling -- he was ruled down by contact, but the play was under review because it appeared ASU saved the ball from hitting out of bounds. The call stood, and UO had first down at the ASU 34.

Barner ran for 29 yards, and then five yards for the touchdown, and UO led 35-24.

Another UO player went down with an injury when a teammate rolled on to safety Eddie Pleasant's leg. The Ducks forced a punt.

The Oregon defense came up big, with sacks by Josh Kaddu and Dewitt Stuckey forcing an ASU punt.

The Ducks went on a drive as the third quarter ended.

Alejandro Maldonado's 37-yard field goal put UO ahead by two touchdowns, 38-24, with 14:40 left.

Osweiler and Robinson hooked up on a 48-yard pass play to the UO 16. A holding call brought back an Osweiler-to-Miles touchdown. The Sun Devils opted for the field goal try, and Garoutte's 30-yarder made it 38-27.

Barner picked up a first down on a run to the ASU 28. Then he broke a run up the middle, getting another first down to the 8, giving Oregon an edge of 243-83 in rushing yards.

Bennett threw incomplete, barely, in the end zone. Barner ran to the 2 and was stopped for no gain on third down.

The Ducks called on Maldonado again, and he nailed a 24-yard field goal with 9:26 remaining: Oregon 41-27.

UO forced the Sun Devils to punt, and Oregon was able to run time off the clock. An Oregon punt was downed at the ASU 5 with 4:19 to go.

The Sun Devils moved into Oregon territory. The Ducks forced a fumble by Osweiler, which ASU recovered, but UO defensive lineman Dion Jordan came off with an injury on the play and the Sun Devils gained a first down on the next play, a pass to the Oregon 24 with less than 90 seconds remaining.

Another pass got to the 8, as Harris went for an interception and missed.

But ASU's Miles couldn't hang on to a sure touchdown catch alone in the end zone and Oregon intercepted for a touchback.

Final score: Ducks 41, Sun Devils 27.
