Bartschi gets four points; Winterhawks get 6-1 win


Sven Bartschi had two goals and two assists for the Portland Winterhawks as they beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-1 Saturday night at Memorial Coliseum.

Brad Ross scored 2:02 into the game for Portland, which never trailed.

The Hawks improved to 5-4-1-0, while Brandon fell to 5-3-0-1.

Ty Rattie's eighth goal of the season, with 1:32 left in the first period, gave Portland a 2-0 lead.

Bartschi scored 3:26 into the second period for a 3-0 edge. A couple of minutes later, Brandon got its goal.

Midway through the period, after a big stop by Portland goalie Mac Carruth, rookie Chase De Leo got his first Western Hockey League score to restore the Hawks' three-goal advantage.

Only 45 seconds later, Portland defenseman Joe Morrow got his first goal of the season.

The Hawks' final goal came at 7:47 of the third period, when Bartschi scored on a power play.

Carruth made 23 saves for the Winterhawks.

Portland's next game is 7 p.m. Tuesday at the coliseum against the Saskatoon Blades. Then comes a nine-game road trip.
