The Culver softball team suffered a double loss at Santiam on Friday in 2A/1A Special District 3 play.
Not only did the Bulldogs fall 5-4 but also a senior starter suffered a season-ending injury. Second baseman Jessica Pollock suffered a broken arm during an infield play in the fifth inning.
"It was a double play attempt," Culver coach Kevin Urbach said. "Jessica got tangled up with the base runner and landed on her left arm."
Thus, Culver is without one of its two experienced seniors playing (pitcher Tiffany Adams being the other). Pollack was one of the leading Bulldog hitters, including a 4-for-4 effort against Sheridan a week ago. The injury means Marissa Kovach will play second.
"Anytime you lose a senior, that's not good," Urbach said. "Jessica was hitting the ball well."
Culver continues league play with a revised schedule. The Bulldogs host Scio at 4:30 p.m. today and travel to Delphian on Friday. Those games are a reversal of the original schedule, meaning Culver will travel to Scio on May 7 and host Delphian on May 9.
Santiam 5, Culver 4: The Bulldogs jumped ahead thanks to a two-run first. Maria Ruiz singled, stole second and advanced to third on Megan Hamlin's sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball. So did Kayley Cook after a single and error.
"We were playing by far our best game of the season until the fifth," Urbach said. "Then Jessica's injury shook us up."
Santiam scored three runs in the fifth, all after injury.
The loss also spoiled a three-hit day by Ruiz who hit a home run and triple as she scored three runs.
"Maria is showing more patience at the plate," Urbach said.
Blanchet 4, Culver 1: Errors hampered the Bulldogs in the Wednesday, April 4 league game. Culver had six errors, leading to the host Cavalier runs.
It gave Adams a tough-luck loss as the senior struck out eight.
