Hot start despite cold for Ellsbury
The Madras native started his third professional season at Portland (Maine) in the AA Eastern League. It is where he finished last season, helping the Sea Dogs (a Boston Red Sox affiliate) win the Eastern League title.
That was in last September's fall weather. Winter hasn't really left the East Coast yet. Six of Portland's first 11 games were postponed due to snow or rain.
Such as the Sea Dog opener, delayed four days. Ellsbury was ready with four hits including three doubles and a stolen base in an 8-6 loss to New Britain.
In his opening six games, the center fielder is hitting .393 with six doubles among his 11 hits. He has also driven in three runs, walked twice and stolen three bases without being caught.
The hot start is similar to his spring training opener. Ellsbury hit a two-run single against Minnesota. The left-handed hitter had a .250 average in eight major league spring games.
