Lesley trying to preserve vanishing West
Community Read author, and former Madras resident Craig Lesley was in town last week, interacting with students, conducting a writers workshop, and speaking to fans.
"When I started writing, I didn't realize how little people in the East knew about the West," he said, noting, "I wrote to honor the vanishing West and preserve colorful place names. So much of it is becoming homogenized."
In his book "The Sky Fisherman" he wanted to capture the feel of a small Western town.
"Madras is much of who I am -- I spent my formative years here. I love small towns and the charm of small towns," Lesley said.
In conjunction with the author's visit, Pete Carlson and Lynn Howland gave fly fishing demonstrations to students at Madras High School. And the names of 10 students were drawn to receive free fly fishing lessons.
