Forest Service worker found dead on trail

The body of a man found on a local hiking trail has been identified as a U.S. Forest Service employee who died of natural causes while working.

James Proctor, 64, of Demming, Wash., was working as a trail coordinator for the forest service when he died Friday, Oct. 14, said Lt. Steve Alexander.

A couple visiting from Chicago found him lying unconscious and unresponsive in the middle of the Larch Mountain Trail, about a fifth of a mile from the start of the trail, at about 1:50 p.m.

The hikers called 9-1-1 and began performing CPR. Emergency crews from Multnomah County Rural Fire Protection District 14 and American Medical Response arrived, but were unable to revive him.

According to the medical examiner's office, Proctor died of heart disease.
