Attendance at fire dept. open house sets record

Forest Grove Fire and Rescue reports successful week of fire prevention efforts

A record number of residents checked in with firefighters at Forest Grove Fire and Rescue's open house Sunday.

Somewhere between 900 and 1,100 people showed up for the festivities, said Dave Nemeyer, Forest Grove Fire Marshall. Kids got to ride in fire engines and tour the station, a great capper to a week of outreach by local firefighters.

Starting last Monday, firefighters fanned out to area schools, trying to connect with as many students as possible. Nemyer said firefighters taught 1,200 students about fire safety, and even got a chance to share lunch time.

'One of the kids said to one of our guys, 'Don't you have special firefighter food to eat?'' Nemeyer said.

(The answer is no).
