Bulldog baseball wins spring break opener

A big game by Jeremiah Calvin helped Culver win its opener of a four-game spring break tournament in Boardmen.
   The Bulldogs beat Pilot Rock 5-4 in Monday's opener. Culver then fell to Umatilla. Culver was scheduled to play Irrigon and Riverside on Tuesday, March 28 (played after press time).
   Spring break wraps up with a noon Saturday home doubleheader against McKenzie. The Bulldogs return to Tri-River League play by traveling to Blanchet (in Salem) on Tuesday, April 1.
   At Boardman, Calvin hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth against Pilot Rock. He also earned the victory, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings.
   Umatilla then beat Culver 9-4, fueled by a six-run fifth inning. Culver had doubles by Calvin, Devin Ozment and Austin Barany.
   The Bulldogs opened Tri-River play by pounding Santiam 11-1 on Tuesday, March 18. Culver took control with six runs in the first two innings.
