Defense keys Bulldog hoop victory

The losing streak is over for the Culver boys' basketball team. The Bulldogs beat Delphian and nearly added to it by upsetting Blanchet in Tri-River League play.
Culver (2-11 league, 4-17 overall) finishes up the season by traveling to Kennedy on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and hosting East Linn Christian on Thursday, Feb. 7. The Bulldogs were also scheduled to travel to Salem Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 29 (played after press time).
Blanchet 45, Culver 42: The Bulldogs were unable to recover from a six-point deficit in the second quarter, being outscored 15-9 in Friday's game.
"We had good looks at the hoop, but just couldn't put the ball in," Culver coach James Macy said. "They were playing a zone and we just couldn't solve it during the first half."
Culver found ways to score in the second half, putting up 25 points. Several of those baskets were by senior Thomas Griffin on inside shots. The senior post had a career-high 13 points.
"We were able to find Thomas open inside and he converted his shots," Macy said. "We tried to get Blanchet out of their zone by pulling the ball out."
Cody Tadlock added seven points for Culver.
Culver 46, Delphian 38: The Bulldogs used solid defense in the second half to end a five-game losing streak in the Jan. 22 game. The Dragons were limited to just 13 points after halftime.
Delphian led 25-20 going into halftime.
"We played better help-side defense," Macy said. "They were getting offensive rebounds in the first half and we kept them from doing that."
Tadlock led the offense with 14 points. Nevin Lewis and John Decker added 10 points each.
