The new Madras Aquatic Center opens to the public Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with scheduled lap and recreational swimming.
Located at 1192 S.E. Kemper Way, just south of the Jefferson County Middle School, the 33,000-square-foot facility offers three separate pools -- a leisure pool, six-lane lap pool, and a smaller pool for the large slide -- as well as a whirlpool tub and a room which can be rented for parties.
General admission rates are $3 for youths 3 to 17, $3.50 for seniors 65 and over, $4 for adults, and $10 for a one-day family pass.
David Evans, chairman of the MAC Board of Directors, said the board looked at anticipated costs and usage, and compared prices of other public facilities in Oregon before they set the prices.
   "They're very competitive," he said.
Regular swimming will continue Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, with a grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony slated for 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1.
On Feb. 2, the pool will offer free swimming for middle school students from 6 to 8 p.m., and for high school students from 9 to 11 p.m., as part of the grand opening. Middle school and high school students must have their student identification cards.
Free swimming for the entire community will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, during Community and Family Day.
The regular pool schedule will begin Monday, Feb. 4.
All yearly passes purchased between Jan. 30, and Feb. 6, will receive a 10 percent discount. Regular price of a youth pass is $190 for a year; senior, $205; adult, $235; and family, $350.
Nonresidents, those who live outside the Madras Aquatic Center taxing district, which has the same boundaries as the 509-J School District, will pay higher rates.
