Local wins Oregon Golden Gloves title

Jasper Smith didn't have an easy route to win the 141-pound title at the Oregon Senior Golden Gloves championship on March 7-8 in Milwaukie.
The Madras High senior faced the defending champion in his opening bout. Smith won that match, along with another to claim his weight title.
The title allows Smith to compete in the Golden Gloves Western Regionals on March 29-30 in Mesquite, Nev., as part of the Oregon team. Competitors from California, Washington and Nevada will also be part of the event.
"I'm nervous and excited," said Smith who's been boxing since he was 8. "This will be the biggest event I've been at."
This was Smith's first appearance at the Senior Golden Gloves, for boxers 18-27. His first bout was against a 27-year-old.
"I didn't think about how old the guy was," Smith said. "I was thinking about being aggressive and throwing punches."
Smith won that match by a decision. He also won his next match by decision, against a fellow 18-year-old. In that match, he was the aggressor.
"I had to chase that guy around the ring," Smith said.
Smith competed in the Junior Golden Gloves. He also won his division while competing in the North American Indigenous Games two years ago.
