Former Madras resident Timothy Puckett, 22, is in stable condition after being shot in Mosul, Iraq, on Saturday, April 5.
The soldier's mother, Robin Boehn, who grew up in Culver, called to let local friends know her son's condition in case they heard about it in the news. Boehn now lives in Bothell, Wash., and Puckett's father, Timothy Puckett Sr. lives in The Dalles.
"They were sweeping houses and being fired on by snipers," she said, noting, "He was the only one injured in the group."
Military officials called Sunday to tell her he had been injured and air evacuated to a hospital in Germany, and gave her a phone number to call for updates on his condition.
"He was shot through the right cheek and it came out behind his right ear," Boehn said, adding, "It's a miracle. That's the only place it could have gone through (without serious injury). I believe God guided that bullet to save his life."
On Monday, she said her son had already gotten up to take a shower. She said he would be flown to New York on Tuesday, and then probably to a hospital at the base in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he is stationed.
Puckett attended Madras High School and was in the JROTC program there. He and his wife Tosha, who is from Culver, have a 4-year-old son and 1 1/2-year-old daughter, who live on base in Colorado.
"I just wanted people to know he will be in the hospital for a while, but he's going to make it and will be OK," Boehn said.
