Kids raise funds for Hulsey's medical expenses
When 10-year-old Kati Viscaino found out that her soccer coach's husband, Mike Hulsey, had been diagnosed with throat cancer, she wanted to help. Maybe a lemonade stand, she thought.
Last Sunday, April 27, Kati and her mom made lemonade and also baked cookies and muffins to sell at the stand, which was staffed by Kati and neighborhood friends.
In just four hours, the kids raised $138 from neighbors and passersby, some of whom stopped more than one time to make a purchase.
"We hoped the money we raised will help pay for (Mike's) medication," the young fundraiser said.
Mike's wife Mary, works at Madras Medical Group, which has set up a donation account in Mike Hulsey's name at Columbia River Bank in Madras.
MMG is holding a pop can drive to benefit Hulsey from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, in the MMG parking lot. They will also hold other fundraisers throughout the summer to help with his medical expenses.
