Portland State will have to involuntarily begin the post-Cory McCaffrey era this weekend. The Vikings play host to Willamette in their first game since McCaffrey, the senior who ranks No. 2 in the nation in rushing, went down with an Achilles' tendon injury. McCaffrey was averaging 146.2 yards per game. He'll be replaced, it appears, by a committee of backs, led by freshman redshirt Shaquille Richard and including sophomore Justin Lilley and senior Willie Griffin. Richard has gained 226 yards (3.8 average). … PSU and Division III Northwest Conference member Willamette are meeting for the first time. Kickoff is 5 p.m. Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field. PSU (3-3 overall, 2-2 Big Sky) is 9-0 since 1996 versus lower-division teams, winning by an average score of 37-14. … After this week, the Vikings will finish their regular season with four Big Sky games: Oct. 29 at Eastern Washington, Nov. 5 at home against Sacramento State, Nov. 12 at Northern Colorado and Nov. 19 at home with Weber State.
Lewis and Clark takes its undefeated record into a 1 p.m Saturday homecoming game with winless Puget Sound at Griswold Stadium. The Pioneers are 5-0 for the first time since 1963 and have assured themselves of a winning season for the first time since 1995. L and C is 2-0 in the Northwest Conference; UPS is 0-3. Pioneers sophomore Simon Mosley was the NWC special teams player of the week after kicking two 43-yard field goals in last week's 30-22 win over Whitworth. … Elsewhere in the NWC, Linfield (5-0, 3-0) plays host to Pacific Lutheran (4-1, 2-0) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and Pacific (0-6, 0-3) goes to Whitworth (1-5, 0-2).
PSU (9-11, 5-3 Big Sky, tied for third) plays Friday at Weber State (1-7 Big Sky) and Saturday at Idaho State (5-3). Vikings freshman Katie O'Brien, from Louisville, Colo, ranks second in the conference in blocks (1.3 per set). … The Portland Pilots (1-7 West Coast Conference) play host to Gonzaga (1-7) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Portland State (6-7-2, 2-1-2 Big Sky, tied for second) has a home match at 11 a.m. today against Weber State (3-1-1) at Hillsboro Stadium. The Vikings will be at Idaho State (1-4-0) on Sunday. PSU's Megan Martin, a 5-5 junior forward from Oregon City High, leads the Big Sky in points (11) and goals (5). … Portland (6-7-1, 1-2-0 WCC, seventh out of nine teams) has a key home match at 8 p.m. Friday against Santa Clara (2-0-1). The Pilots also will play at San Francisco (2-2-0) on Sunday. UP's Micaela Capelle, a 5-4 sophomore from Barlow High, leads the WCC in points (9), and teammate Kaila Cameli, a 5-5 sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., is tied for second (8). … In the Cascade Collegiate Conference, third-ranked Concordia takes an 11-3-1 record and 6-0-0 CCC mark into road matches Saturday at Northwest and Monday at Evergreen State. Warner Pacific (4-3-1, 3-3) will play at Evergreen State on Saturday and at Northwest on Monday.
The University of Portland, 6-6-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the WCC, is idle until Wednesday, when the Pilots will welcome Gonzaga to Merlo Field at 7 p.m. … Concordia, ranked 12th, takes on Northwest at Delta Park at 6 p.m. Saturday and plays Evergreen State at 4 p.m. Tuesday, also at Delta. Warner Pacific has home games at David Douglas High at 1 p.m. Saturday versus Evergreen State and 6 p.m. Tuesday against Northwest.
