HARRISON, N.J. - The Portland Timbers have one game remaining, but for all intents and purposes their season is over.
The Timbers' hopes of making the MLS playoffs died Thursday night at Red Bull Arena.
The New York Red Bulls eliminated Portland from playoff contention and earned the final berth by beating the Philadelphia Union 1-0.
New York needed just a draw to clinch, and the Red Bulls got the only goal on a header by Dane Richards in the seventh minute.
Ten teams will advance to the MLS postseason. Eight, including the Timbers, won't.
Portland will take an 11-14-8 record into its regular-season finale at 6 p.m. PT Saturday at Real Salt Lake.
The Timbers needed a loss Thursday by New York and a victory over Real Salt Lake to make the playoffs.
New York improved to 10-8-16.
