Lewis and Clark 6-0 after holding off UPS 31-28


The Lewis and Clark Pioneers stayed undefeated, beating Puget Sound 31-28 Saturday at Griswold Stadium.

Lewis and Clark has reached 6-0 overall and is 3-0 in the Northwest Conference for the first time since 1966.

The Pioneers' next game is 1 p.m. Saturday at Pacific Lutheran. PLU lost Saturday on the road to No. 5 Linfield 45-7 to fall to 4-2, 2-1.

Puget Sound came to Portland with an 0-6 mark, 0-3 in NWC play, but the Loggers made it a contest, playing the Pioneers to a 14-14 standstill in the first half and outscoring Lewis and Clark 14-3 in the fourth quarter.

L and C sophomore quarterback Keith Welch scored all four of his team's touchdowns, rushing 23 times for 142 yards and hitting 26 of 36 passes for 322 yards. Welch had one interception, his first of the season.

Shawn Evans led the Pios in receiving with 12 catches for 171 yards.

Fellow senior Joevonte Mayes caught five passes for 52 yards.

Seniors Dan Cutin, Chris Kelly and Louis Baltazar led the defense, combining for 32 tackles, two forced fumbles and two sacks.

L and C led 7-0 after one quarter on Welch's 9-yard run.

After a Puget Sound touchdown, Welch ran 7 yards for another score. But UPS scored with 32 seconds left in the half to even the contest.

Welch capped drives of 32 and 68 yards in the third quarter with runs of 5 and 1 yard.

After another Puget Sound TD, sophomore Simon Mosley kicked a pivotal 41-yard field goal for the Pioneers with 6:33 remaining.

UPS scored 1:30 later, but the Pioneers drove from their 35 to the Loggers' 7 before turning over the ball on downs with 56 seconds left, and Puget Sound was unable to advance before time ran out.
