Timbers end season with draw
SANDY, Utah - In stoppage time, the Portland Timbers pulled out a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake in their MLS season finale Saturday night.
The Timbers failed to be one of 10 teams to make the playoffs in the 18-team league. Their fate had been sealed Thursday night, when they were mathematically eliminated from contention.
Defender Mamadou "Futty" Danso scored in the 91st minute at Rio Tinto Stadium to keep the Timbers from becoming the second MLS team with double-digit road losses. Portland finished 2-9-5 on the road and 11-14-8 overall.
Danso scored off a pass from Brian Umony.
Real Salt Lake (15-11-8) had led 1-0 since the 45th minute, when Saborio scored his team-high 11th goal on a chip shot over Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
The Timbers blew a penalty kick in the 55th minute, as midfielder/captain Jack Jewsbury's shot hit and bounced over the crossbar.
Each team finished with 15 shots. The Timbers led 5-1 in corner kicks.
