Helping Hands needs help with holiday gift program

by: stock.xchng TOY TIME -- Helping Hands is searching for toy donations.

The Helping Hands gift program is already underway. The forms are at all the schools for families in need. Pick one up, fill it out and return to the school at which you got it. Deadline is Nov. 5. I know it sounds early, but the tags need to be made and out to local businesses before Thanksgiving.

The businesses participating again this year are: YMCA, US Bank in Old Town, Key Bank, Sherwood Ice Arena, Safeway, Albertson's, Chase Bank, Sherwood Chamber of Commerce and Curves. Just go check out the name of a child, shop and return to the business. Please don't wrap the gifts. Deadline for having gifts back is Dec. 8. If you are interested in how the program works or want to sponsor whole families, please give Velma a call at 503-625-7537.

Velma has retired from the food part of the Helping Hands program and is now training three people for the holiday gift program: They are Alice Thornton, Deena Leavitt and Darla States.

If there is a need for food and you live in Sherwood, please call Dottie and Gerry Edy 503-625-7537. For the gift program call Velma 503-625-7537.

Last year Helping Hands fed over 160 families and provided gifts for 360 children with the help of the community.

Helping Hands will be distributing food on the morning of Dec. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon, and the gifts will be going out on the same day and time from the Rebekah Lodge which is just up the street from the church between First Street and Railroad St. The Rebekah's served hot chocolate and coffee and doughnuts last year, which was wonderful. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season.
